Northstar, a Hawaii-based online school has launched in Hawaii and is hoping to expand the territory’s enrollment to over 5,000 students by the end of the year.
Northstar’s first school, the Maui High School, opened in 2017, but its location was changed to Kauai after a federal judge ruled the school was in violation of federal immigration law.
Northstar then moved its facility to Waikiki, and in 2018 opened the second Maui school in the state, which opened in 2019.
The company says it plans to expand its campus in Waikikikai by 2019 and the islands of Maui and Molokai by 2020.
The Waikīkī school’s students are all native Hawaiian and speak the language of the school, which includes English, Hawaiian, Tagalog and Hiloese.
The main building on campus, which is made up of three floors, has about 50 classrooms and about 80 learning spaces.
The facility also has a movie room, a cafe, a meeting room, and a gymnasium.
The school also offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities and has classes for adults, such as drama, dance, theater, and sports.
The college was founded by a group of Hawaii families in 2015, and the Mauai High School is the oldest school in Hawaiʻi.
Northstars principal, Jennifer O’Malley, says it was difficult to get the school certified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act because there was not enough room in the building.
She says the school’s website is full of resources and that she has been working with the school to make sure the website is updated.
The facility is owned by a non-profit organization called the MauIKi Educational Trust.
The trust’s mission is to help Hawaiʼi students with disabilities access the benefits of education through a private, non-denominational school, according to its website.
NorthStar has received support from a number of different foundations, including the Kauai Education Foundation, the Hawaiian Institute of Science and Technology, the Hawaiʝi Education Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health.
The Hawaii Education Association is a nonprofit organization that works to improve education for students with learning disabilities.
