Lately, there’s been a lot of chatter about the state of online school choice.
The debate has raged for years, but now that the federal government has lifted its ban on online education, it seems like it’s time to finally see some data.
A new report from the National Conference of State Legislatures finds that online schools are gaining ground, but there’s still a lot to learn about the quality of online learning.
While the report says that more than half of online schools fall into the top 20 percent of schools nationwide, the study does note that there are a lot more places out there that are not online and that the top 10 percent is far from ideal.
“The data that we’ve collected shows that many online schools offer students a lot less than a traditional public school does,” said John Fauci, the report’s lead author and an assistant professor of education at the University of California, San Diego.
“For instance, some schools are teaching in an office setting.
Some are even teaching on mobile devices.
Some online schools also have no physical classrooms or buildings.”
Faucel says there are some positive trends in online education that are beginning to catch on.
In fact, online schools have become a key part of the school-choice movement.
“More states are opening up to online schools, and they are more inclusive of all students,” Fauce said.
“A lot of states have done that by giving the option of online enrollment, or they have opened up online school options for low-income students.”
He said that while there are still a number of online programs available in certain states, they are much more limited in scope and are generally limited to students from low- and moderate-income families.
“They are often offering less intensive programs,” he said.
Fauces findings are in line with the report that found that the majority of online students are from low income families, and the number of students from families in the bottom 10 percent of income is about two-thirds.
“There’s a lot happening on this issue,” said Faucci, who is also a professor at the California Institute of Technology’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Education.
“In the past few years, states have been opening up a lot and expanding opportunities for students from all backgrounds.
There are more schools in the United States, and there are more online programs than there are traditional public schools.”
Faced with a rapidly expanding online world, schools have to look for ways to cater to students with different needs.
“When you’re trying to create a learning environment that’s personalized for a particular student, you need to consider things like how much time is allotted for each student,” said G. Scott Gagnon, a senior lecturer in education at Johns Hopkins University.
Gagnons research suggests that online learning could be a good option for students with limited resources.
“We have seen that when you’re looking at resources like online learning, a lot can be done on a budget, and that’s important for people with limited budgets,” he explained.
“Online learning can also be used for students who are struggling academically or who are trying to figure out where they fit in a larger system.”
He pointed to research that found online schools can be a way for students to learn and apply for scholarships and other financial aid.
But, he said, online school success can also depend on a number other factors, including whether students are comfortable with learning online and whether they have an interest in the program.
“If they don’t have an understanding of the curriculum, they may not want to go to a traditional school,” Gagn on how online learning can be beneficial for students.
“And then they may have a sense that they have to do a lot for themselves, because they’re not going to be doing any research,” he added.
Faus said that online education could also provide a platform for students looking to start their own businesses, although the study found that students who were self-employed were more likely to be in the top 1 percent of online education students than those who were employed full-time.
“It’s important to be aware of how online education can impact your student,” Faus added.
“That’s really the point of online schooling.
You’re creating an opportunity for students so that they’re able to work on their own skills, so they can build skills that will allow them to compete in the world.”
Faus and Gagnos research suggests there are two types of online learners: those who are working towards a bachelor’s degree and those who have a bachelor of arts or a master’s degree.
Those who are aiming for a bachelor degree are the most likely to enroll in online schools.
And, of course, there are also those who want to pursue an advanced degree.
But Faus thinks that for students aiming to get a bachelor, they need to do more than just attend a school that offers online education.
